What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers structured therapy and support for mental health or substance abuse issues. It’s more intensive than standard outpatient care, but doesn’t require 24-hour residence at the facility. Participants attend therapy sessions several times a week, typically in the evenings, while maintaining their daily responsibilities like school and work.

Frequently Asked Questions about IOP

Our IOP at Evolve treats a range of mental health and substance use disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, addiction, and eating disorders. We also provide support for issues such as grief, trauma, and relationship difficulties.

Unlike inpatient or residential programs where teens stay overnight, IOPs allow teens to live at home and continue with their daily routines while receiving intensive treatment during scheduled sessions after school.

Our IOP hours are Monday – Thursday, 4pm to 7pm. Teens receive a minimum of 3 clinical hours per day, 3-4 days per week. A typical day involves attending therapy sessions, group counseling, DBT skills training, experiential therapy, and possibly medication management appointments. We also offer one multi-family group weekly.

Teens who require more support than traditional therapy, but do not need round-the-clock care in a residential facility can benefit from an IOP. It’s suitable for teens who are stable enough to live at home but still need intensive treatment to manage their symptoms and work toward recovery.

IOP treatment at Evolve usually lasts at least a month. At the start of treatment, we work with each family to find the best schedule for their teen.

IOP treatment includes a combination of group therapy, individual counseling, educational workshops, and other therapeutic interventions. With this combination, IOP for teens addresses a wide range of mental health and addiction issues.

After completing an IOP, teens may transition to step-down programs for ongoing support. Our team will work with you and your teen to determine the best aftercare plan, which may include therapy, support groups, medication management, and other resources to help maintain progress and prevent relapse.
